What is an Employee Assistance Programme?

A comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is defined as a professional programme providing assessment and or short term counselling, consultation and/or referral to individuals experiencing a variety of personal problems (e.g. alcohol and other drug abuse, emotional, family and other problems of daily living). All individuals eligible for EAP services may seek them by self-referral, or in the case of employees, a supervisory referral may initiate the process.

Why have an Employee Assistance Programme?

A large number of persons experience personal challenges, which affect their personal lives, their families and eventually their job performance. When these problems begin to affect performance on the job, they become the direct concern of the Company since they may lead to problems such as poor quality output from such employees, increased risk of accidents and workplace conflicts, poor corporate decisions - ultimately a negative effect on the company’s overall productivity and profits.
An Employee Assistance Programme is intended to help employees deal with issues before they begin to negatively affect the performance of their duties, and as such enable them to continue to be productive and well employees.
