Programmes - Confident Parenting
return to Programmes main page

“I have been encouraged to be reflective about what my own parenting practices are in light of what I have learned. Consequently, I am constantly assessing my parenting actions and how they impact on the kind of adults my children will grow into.”

Social Worker, Family Services Division
Past participant of Confident Parenting

“I strongly recommend that all fathers . . . be given the opportunity to access this programme. . . the result, I am sure, will be a drastic reduction in youth crime, juvenile delinquency, domestic violence and better quality families.”

Community Policing Officer
Past participant of Confident Parenting

This programme is funded by the JB Fernandes Trust I

This programme is open to the public and is founded on the premise that:

  • Parents are doing their best

  • There is no perfect parenting

  • Each parent is an expert on his/her own child

During the programme professional expertise will be offered as useful knowledge to add to the parental tool-kit and not as advice imposed from an outsider.

This course will help parents to:

  • Establish their own style of parenting

  • Understand their children’s behaviour

  • Find alternative methods of discipline

  • Communicate better with children and spouse.

  • Take some of the stress out of parenting

  • Reflect on how they are relating to their children and caring for themselves

  • Experiment with new skills, which can be applied both within family and working relationships

This course addresses the following:

  • What is a parent? What is a child?

  • Children’s needs – Parents' needs, finding a balance

  • Children’s behaviour

  • Listening and communicating

  • Temperament and parenting style

  • Discipline and alternatives to punishment

  • Bonding, attachment and separation

  • Play

  • Major issues: Food, sleep, tantrums, sibling rivalry

  • What do we want for our children?

During this programme we also aim to help parents “see through their children’s eyes” and explore the variety of factors that impact upon the way we perceive and carry out our roles as parents.

Time and Duration

These programmes are offered in approximately 5 to 8 sessions, at a time and place convenient for the target group.

Groups, organisations and companies may request this programme.

N.B. We also offer one-day parenting workshops.
